Introduction Welcome to the Sam Houston viola page!
Sam Houston State is a wonderful place to earn your viola degree with many resources at your fingertips. The most valuable part of the program is the positive environment, nurturing faculty, and supportive student population. The string program is intentionally kept at a small number so that each student benefits from individualized tailored instruction from their applied lesson professor. The viola studio particulary has a supportive and nurturing vibe as each student is afforded opportunities to get and give feedback from their peers and from Professor Bledsoe in a constructive and positive manner.
Viola studio class meets each week and often includes performances and discussions about viola repertory and performance issues, as well as career building techniques such as how to run a teaching studio, how to build a resume, and how to give and receive constructive criticism.
Sam Houston is one of the most affordable colleges in the country at just around $7,000 per year, all while providing instruction from top performers and teachers in the field. SHSU is also home to world class facilities with the new Gaertner Performing Arts Center. We are also proud to say that 100% of our Music Education graduates earn jobs upon graduation with competitive salaries.

SHSU DEGREE INFO Scholarships and Financial AidThe SHSU School of Music offers substantial music scholarships based on your entrance audition. In addition, there are other scholarships that can be earned while attending Sam Houston based on merit, GPA and service to the University.
Viola Studio Class occurs once a week. It is a fantastic performance opportunity and a chance for us to practice giving constructive feedback. Each studio class is like a masterclass. We learn just as much from playing as we do from observing and helping other students grow and progress as musicians. You will also learn about how to run and manage a private studio of your own.
Each year the School of Music hosts a number of guest professional musicians who perform concerts and/or present master classes on campus.
Unique to Sam Houston, students can get involved with the Huntsville Youth Orchestra where they gain valuable teaching/conducting experience before they even begin their student teaching (Mus Ed majors mostly).
Access to our extensive Music Library which holds many viola scores and historical info.
Students also have opportunities to work as professional performers and private teachers in the Greater Houston Area. There are many community and regional orchestras and a wealth of private students seeking teachers. The skills you learn at SHSU prepare you to be a professional working musician.
